Science After Dark is a lecture series at the Central Coast Aquarium. An evening for those 21 and older, held on the last Tuesday of each month, January through May. *March is skipped due to Spring Break

January 28- Steve Hendricks, Cal Poly Professor- “From Ocean to Plate” This presentation will discuss the environmental and human health impacts of the seafood that you eat. Learn how to make sustainable seafood choices to help protect our oceans now and for future generations.

April- Sophia Barwegen, Coastal Discovery Center Coordinator- Dive Into Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary: NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a federally protected marine area that spans from Marin to Cambria and contains biodiverse ecosystems like extensive kelp forests and deep sea canyons. During this talk, you will be taking a deeper dive into what makes this area of the Central Coast so special including venturing into the depths of Monterey Canyon to listen to whales, visiting one of the world’s only octopus gardens, and learning about the importance of our lush kelp forests.

May- Margot Kandarian, Oyster Farmer- Margot will be providing and shucking fresh oysters as an appetizer! Oyster Growing on the Central Coast and Beyond: Come learn all about oyster farming from a local oyster farmer. Margot Kandarian, owner of Flying Colors Co. mobile oyster bar, will cover the life cycle of oysters and all about local aquaculture in Morro Bay. We will also touch on other methods of oyster aquaculture used in other environments in the Pacific Northwest, on the East Coast, and in France.
