Marine Life Monitoring

Hands On, Feet In Marine Science

Program Info

Come and join us for one of our exciting Marine Life Monitoring Programs and take science to a whole new level.
  • Each two hour program is priced at $700
  • Available for 6th-12th grades.
  • Each program includes:
    • A 30 minute classroom introduction and overview.
    • 90 minutes of field sampling, data collection, and closing discussion.
    • Self-guided Aquarium exploration time.

In The Tide

Join the Central Coast Aquarium as we explore the rocky intertidal communities of Avila Bay. This program’s goal is to actively engage students in the scientific process. Through investigation and data collection, students go beyond the classroom as marine scientists to better understand abundance and diversity of local organisms.

Middle school and high school students participating in these programs will learn sampling methods used by scientists to study marine habitats and the organisms that live there. The data collected during each monitoring program can be added to our databases and made available to participating classes for future classroom analyses.

What To Bring:

  • Small personal bags and water bottles.
  • Sun protection (hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc.).
  • Warm clothing for chilly mornings.
  • Sturdy close-heeled shoes that can get wet (Crocs and flip flops are not recommended for traversing slippery rocks).

Scholarships

The Central Coast Aquarium strives to offer scholarship assistance for school program fees. Funds are awarded at the discretion of the Aquarium on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted.

Note: Some funds are reserved for SLO County Title I students. Applicants will be asked to provide information about their school, program of interest, and a statement of need describing how the desired program will enhance student learning.
